'A Beautiful Mind' Deconstruction (part 2)

Point 1:

Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Medium shot of his body
- The camera pans out to reveal the table surrounding him and to show his friends just as they arrive and sit down.
- It then cuts to a two shot of him and his friend, showing his intense discomfort which is juxtaposed with his friend's ease.
- Cuts to the blonde woman as she walks in, this is a medium shot of her showing it from their perspective.

Editing:
- Eyeline match of him looking to the blonde woman.
- Two shot of him is cross cut in to show his opinion.

Sound:
- Gentle jazz music in the background and there is the diegetic noise of people chatting showing that its a very sociable but chilled place.
- The diegetic sound of his papers rustling is very loud showing that his work is a big part of his life, so much so that his friend says 'Nash, you might wanna stop shuffling your papers for five seconds' telling us that his work is clearly very important.
- There is then the diegetic sound of all his friends settling down around him and he replies 'I will not buy you gentlemen beer' showing that it has happened before as that is instantly what he thinks of.
- Diegetic sound of Nash saying 'Oh' showing that they all recognise the woman without even needing to speak about it.
- Nash saying 'anyone else feel like she should be moving in slow motion?' diegetic sound of him chuckling which sounds like a child laughing at his own joke.
Mise En Scene:
- His head cut out of the frame, and the focus is largely on his work showing his main obsession.
- Nash seems very small and cramped in the scene as he is folding in on himself, this shows his lack of confidence, he is also clutching his work to his chest.
- The blonde woman is the only one looking over showing that she is aware of her own beauty straight away and she is expecting to be approached.

Point 2:
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Close up of one of the friends looking at her and wondering what type of wedding she would like, shows all the guys preparing to battle it out between them.
- Two shot of the other friends as they all discuss
- Medium shot of Nash as he sits alone, showing him taking in the information and figuring out stuff alone.
- Long shot of them at the table, shows how they look from afar.
Editing:
- Cross cutting is used throughout the scene to show them discussing and giving everyone's opinions.
- Cuts to the group of girls as they look over at them.
Sound:
- Diegetic dialogue of one of the friends saying 'Have you remembered nothing?'

- Diegetic dialogue of them working out how to get the girl 'In competition individual ambition serves the common good, exactly, even man for himself gentlemen.'
- Diegetic noise of 'alright no body move, shes looking over here'

Mise En Scene:
- He is wearing dark clothing like the rest of his peers showing that in some ways he does fit in but in others he doesn't (this could be shown by the white tee shirt underneath connoting innocence)

Point 3:
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Close up of the blonde girl looking at Nash, gets closer when one person walks past the camera.
- Birds eye view of the guys trying to get the girl.
- Medium shots of the girls all rejecting the guys.
- Medium shot of all the guys dancing with the girls.
Editing:
- The guys disappear in puffs of smoke by visual editing to show them being rejected by the blonde.
- The girls turn around and disappear into the background with visual editing.
- The blonde's face gets brighter as she looks at Nash, showing he has just realised the flaw in the theory.
Sound:
- Non-diegetic music as Nash has his revelation, this music is rather angelic and has harmonic singing in the background as he shows his theory.
- Sound goes back to normal as he says 'that the only way we're all gonna get laid' to show him coming back to the normal world
- Non diegetic sound of all the guys disappearing into thin air, showing them being unsuccessful.
Mise En Scene:
- Blonde woman out of all the brunettes, makes her look individual and she breaks the connotations of blonde being innocent.
- Red lips shows passion and love, makes her attractive to the others.
- Has her hands on her hips when they all approach her, showing her confidence. However when they go for the other girls she has her hands by her sides in a defeated manner showing that she is surprised, especially as it zooms out from her confused face looking at the guys dancing with the other girls and then makes her seem smaller and isolated until she disappears.
- Nash hasn't included himself in the group of guys approaching the girls, showing that he prefers to work out theories and such rather than actually try them out and use them to his advantage.

Point 4:

Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Close up of Nash as he explains his theory
- Medium shot of him figuring it all out
- Medium long shot of him in a crowd, bustling past all the people.
- Two shot with Nash and the blonde
- Medium shot of the blonde looking at Nash as he runs off, and her getting confused with her friend in a two shot. This shows that Nash places his work and research well above his social life. Also shows that he did something that the blonde didn't expect showing us that he isn't like everyone else.
- Tracks him as he gets up and gets his stuff.
Editing:
- Scenes of him talking to his friends are cross cut with close ups of his face as he thinks it through.
- Continuity editing as he gets up, we follow him around the room as he tries to get out and it is smooth, they haven't edited it.
Sound:
- The music gets loud when he says that the theory was incorrect and he gets up to leave. There is diegetic dialogue with rest of his friends saying 'here he goes' showing that the way he is acting isn't unusual.
- Diegetic dialogue of him quietly saying 'Thank you' to the blonde before leaving, letting the non diegetic music get louder as she looks after him seeming quite confused.
- The use of repetition in his dialogue makes us visibly see it getting clearer and clearer in his mind and it starting to make sense, this helps us empathise with him a bit more as we can feel the way he is feeling due to the increasing speed of the non diegetic music.
- His friends express their doubt as there is the diegetic dialogue of one saying that if its for him to get the blonde he can 'go to hell'

Mise En Scene:
- She is the only one if focus in this shot, and his absence as clearly left a gap in the framing as she is on the right hand side and there is a big space on the left where he could have been. This could show how he could have had her in his life yet he chose his work again over a social life.
- Dominant colour in this scene is green, and the small inklings of red here and there act as a foil in the scene to emphasise its importance in Nash's life.
