Shutter Island trailer: Deconstruction

Point 1:
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Long establishing shot of the island and boat, establishes the scene as being quite creepy
- Medium two shot of two men talking, introduces the two characters and their relationship to the audience.
Editing:
- Black transition screens are cross cut within the short shots, makes it fast paced and dramatic.

Sound:
- Diegetic speech, one actor saying its a mental asylum which sets up the location, shows the genre of the film.
-Ominous sub bass sound track which makes it tense.
Mise En Scene:
- White fog, makes it mysterious.
- Lighting is predominately low key which creates a spooky atmosphere.
- Dominant colour of blue, makes it clinical, links in with the setting.
Point 2:
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Medium POV shot of woman shushing at him, which pans across to show the movement of DiCaprio as he walks past.
- Close up on ' Restricted Area' once again sets the scene and shows that its similar to a prison.
Editing:
- Slows down the woman shushing to emphasise the moment.

Sound:
- Diegetic sound of woman shushing.
- Non diegetic tense music, and a whoosing sound when she shushes.
- Diegetic buzzer sound and door shutting, emphasises the security.
Mise En Scene:
- Red of the light connotes danger and there is diagonal composition which tells us that something isn't right.

Point 3:
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
- Medium shot
- Two shot which shows their relationship is intimate
Editing:
- She is turning into ash, use of visual editing
- Jump cuts before and after this scene, looks like its flashing. Fast paced and it raises the tension
Sound:
- Non diegetic sound similar to a male scream
- Drumming noise which goes at the same time as the editing which is getting faster and faster, reaching a climax
Mise En Scene:
- At an intimate distance
- Slightly dense background, we can get that they had a house together etc
- Dominant colour is green, suppose to be the happy part of his life but its falling apart.

- The colour is juxtaposed with the scenes in the asylum and its normally high key except now it seems low key as its falling apart.
- Grey ashes, red coal connotes death.

Title:
Typography:
- Block capitals
- Murky silver colour, looks dirty
- Looks like a sign, bold and it stands out
- Simply and minimalistic
Editing/Sound:
- Appears at the same time as the drum, what the whole trailer is building up to
- Fades away into darkness
- Only there for a few seconds and has a big impact, memorable.
